Selling Yourself

There is an art to making others notice you and want to have you on their team, as an associate, friend, manager, or as an employee. In the world of business, it is called "selling yourself."

Selling yourself with confidence is fundamentally simple and everyone can do it, but not everyone can do it effectively because selling yourself is not just about bringing attention to yourself.

What selling yourself does is put you in a position of high regard, of making yourself known in a positive way and it puts you in the sights of people who can and will help you further your career.

And you can sell yourself without selling your soul. In other words, you want to make a good impression but you don't have to kiss anybody's butt doing it. Besides, people know when you are kissing up to them. Some like it but most people don't.

Make the first impression a good impression because the first impression really is a lasting impression. As always, the first thing a person notices about you is the way you dress, so dress for success.

A handshake and a smile can tell volumes about a person. When you meet someone, a firm handshake, but not too firm, a warm smile, and a pleasant hello, will take you a long way.

Learn how to communicate effectively and build rapport with others. Don't be shy about networking because it is one of the best ways to meet people with interests similar to your own.

Know what you are talking about before offering your opinion and don't talk too much or hog conversations. Learn to listen effectively and be diplomatic, knowing when to listen and when to speak.

Don't be argumentative and don't take criticisms personally. Although criticisms do hurt the ego, there may be a hint of truth in them so think about the criticism and use it as a positive bridge.

Never let a negative comment keep you from moving ahead because you can set a positive tone by focusing on what you have as your agenda. Others will follow your lead and that makes you a leader.

Remember, no two people are the same but there are similarities in everyone. As an individual, you are just as important as anyone else and you can sell yourself as being the most important person in the room, while making others feel good about themselves and about you.

All these things come into play, whether you are looking for your first job, if you are an entrepreneur,or if you are a corporate executive.

Salespeople, more than anyone, have to sell themselves as well as the product they are promoting. Realtors, insurance salesmen, car salesmen, and others who sell for a living, have to make potential buyers believe in them just as much as they want them to believe in their product.

If you want to be successful, take a good look at yourself and try to determine your faults. By understanding what your weaknesses are, you can work on improving those areas, and in turn, do a better job at selling yourself.
