Creating a Mission Statement

When we think about mission statements, we think about corporations or institutions. Well, you can create a mission statement of your own.

When preparing a mission statement, your goals play a big role in successfully creating your statement. Mentoring can also play a huge role, because it reflects on who has influenced your life, or who’s life you have influenced.

What is a Mission Statement?

A mission statement describes your unique purpose in life. It captures what qualities you want to develop, what you want to accomplish, and what contributions you want to make.

A personal mission statement becomes a guide for your life, inspiring you to make the decisions that will best help you reach your goals and fulfill your vision.

When starting your mission statement, ask yourself these 5 questions:

•Who has influenced your life in a good way? How?
◦Mentoring
•What are some of your ambitions? Talents?
◦Goals
•What has been one defining moment in your life?
◦Mentoring
•What contributions do you want to make during your lifetime?
◦Goals
•How would you like people to describe you?
◦Goals and or mentoring.
You may find that your mission statement will be much more balanced and much easier to work with, if you break it down into the specific roles that you play in your life and the goals you want to accomplish in each area.

•Look at your professional role – manager, salesperson, assistant
•Think of your personal roles – husband, wife, father, mother, friend, neighbor
•Your community roles – public service, volunteer, mentor, sponsorship
It may take several months, possibly years, to create a personal or professional mission statement. Being proactive and taking responsibility in our lives is the first step.
