How To Get A Rodeo Scholarship

National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association
The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Foundation offers a number of $1,000 scholarships each year. Some scholarships are awarded based on performance in the ring. However, participants at College National Finals Rodeo with the three highest grade point averages will also receive scholarship assistance.

National Little Britches Rodeo Association (NLBRA)
High school seniors who have participated in NLBRA events for three years are eligible to apply for one of the NLBRA/Wrangler Academic Scholarships offered each year. A total of $8,000 will be awarded--$2,000 each to one male and female recipient and $1,000 each to four other students. Scholarship monies can be used toward the cost of tuition, fees, books, or room and board. Individuals planning on attending a two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational school are invited to apply.

The Rainwater Family Scholarship provides $500 in scholarship assistance to high school seniors who have been NLBRA members for three years or more. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.

Tarleton State University, Texas
Tarleton University offers a number of scholarships for members of the rodeo team. The amount of funding varies, by scholarship. Applicants must be full-time students and members of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) to be eligible to receive funding. In addition, Tarleton offers stall scholarships for the practice facilities. Scholarships are in the amount of $1,000 for one stall and $1,500 for two stalls.

High school seniors interested in being considered for rodeo scholarships are asked to fill out a general scholarship application form and to make arrangements to visit the campus. The prospective student is asked to bring a copy of his or her transcript, SAT scores, and a videotape or DVD taken of the student during competition so that the coaching staff can evaluate competitive ability.

Colorado State University
Two separate scholarship opportunities are offered to members of the rodeo team at Colorado State. Apply for the Mike Cervi Memorial Scholarship by completing a general CSU scholarship application form. Students interested in being considered for the General Rodeo Scholarship can get an application form from the CSU RAM RODEO faculty advisor.

Northeastern Junior College, Colorado
Rodeo scholarships are also available at Northeastern Junior College. In selecting scholarship recipients, such factors as academic ability, dedication to the sport, and attitude are taken into consideration. Performance is not the only consideration. Scholarship funds are available to help defray the cost of tuition, books, accommodation, and meals. Application forms are available online.

Trinity Valley Community College, Texas
Trinity Valley offers rodeo scholarships to students as well. Applications can be submitted at any time during the year, although priority is given to those received before May 1. In addition to a completed application form (available online), interested individuals are asked to submit a copy of their transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a video showing them in competition. Scholarship recipients must maintain a GPA of 2.0, and attend all area rodeos to continue receiving funding.
