How to Get A Scholarship for Lacrosse Players

The game of lacrosse is one of the oldest sports in North America. Dating back to the early Native Americans, it was thought of as being a good way for young men to prepare for war. If you are a modern-day lacrosse "warrior" who is looking for a way to help pay for your education, what choices do you have? Here are some options for you to consider:

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Postgraduate Scholarship Program
The NCAA provides one-time grants in the amount of $7,500.00 each to both male and female athletes who have demonstrated high academic achievements along with their prowess in their chosen sport. Lacrosse players who are in their last year of participation at the intercollegiate level are invited to apply.

Texas High School Lacrosse League
The Ray Maitland Memorial Scholarship offers four cash payments ranging from $300.00-$500.00 and one set of lacrosse equipment. To be considered for these funds, applicants must have participated in lacrosse at the high school level and be planning on continuing their playing career in college.

Recipients are chosen based on the contents of a personal essay and letters of recommendation submitted by applicants.

Watertown Lacrosse
Both boys and girls who have participated in the Watertown Lacrosse League for a minimum of two years may be eligible to apply for a cash award of either $500.00 or $1,000.00. Interested persons who have already been accepted to a post-secondary institution are required to provide three letters of recommendation, a certificate confirming they have completed community service, and a letter outlining his or her need for financial aid. A GPA of at least 2.5 is also required.

Annapolis Youth Lacrosse Association
One or more scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00 each are offered to high school seniors each year. Recipients are not required to continue playing lacrosse at the college level. To be considered for this funding, applicants must have played in the Association for a minimum of one Spring season.

A completed application form must be submitted, along with a resume or personal profile detailing the applicant's community service and participation in athletics and extracurricular activities, four letters of recommendation (one must be from the school principal), an official transcript, and a personal essay.

North Carolina Lacrosse Officials Association - Tony Cullen Memorial Scholarship
High school lacrosse players from North Carolina who are planning on attending and playing lacrosse at a North Carolina University can apply for one of two $1,000.00 scholarships. These funds can be used for tuition, books, fees, accommodation, lacrosse uniforms, or team fees.

Each applicant's GPA, class rank, and academic achievements are considered when determining which players will be awarded scholarships. In addition, three letters of recommendation, a letter from a North Carolina institution confirming the applicant's intention to play lacrosse, and a personal statement are required.

Georgetown University
The Alfond Family Athletic Scholarship is awarded each year to one or more undergraduate students who are members of the lacrosse team. Applicants from the New England states will be given preference. Contact the Athletics Department (ph: 202-687-2435) for more information.

University of Delaware (Department of Mechanical Engineering)
Undergraduate students in the ME program who are also participating in varsity athletics are eligible to apply for one of several Miles Powell Jr. Scholarships. Faculty members nominate individual students for consideration. Recent recipients include members of the lacrosse team.
